Weekend Read 6 July 2024

Hello July, hello, hello, hello and in this, the seventh month of the year, I am going to begin this Weekend Read by announcing and launching another new supplement which carries the DoSe branding.  In total, we now have twenty-three formulations in the range, albeit there are still a few label changes to be made on some of those products.

This launch will complete the first curated phase of DoSe supplementation, but I will continue to drip-feed in our new and improved formulations for skin health as we complete our transition from the Garden of Wisdom skincare formulations to the DoSe skincare formulations.  So, onwards and please allow me to introduce you to DoSe Digestive Enzyme Complex, but before I talk about the product, let’s take a look at digestive enzymes and the role that these enzymes play in our bodies.

Digestive enzymes work as catalysts in the gut to break down food efficiently, allowing our bodies to receive the vitamins and nutrients required to function effectively.  This efficient breakdown of food helps prevent a number of intestinal problems such as bloating, constipation, gas and inflammation, since improper breakdown of food can lead to toxicity, and the build-up of toxins can often cause inflammation of the cells lining the gut.

Digestive enzyme production declines dramatically by the time we reach our forties, and in fact there is a decline of roughly 75% in levels from our twenties, which would explain why so many digestive concerns arise as we age.  The predominant concern here is bloating, but of course many experience sluggish digestion, inflammatory bowel concerns and the recurrence of constipation, the latter of which is also an incredibly common issue. Statistics show that women experience far more instances of constipation than men, and that includes travel constipation which is most definitely a thing, an extremely uncomfortable thing.

In releasing and launching the DoSe formulations, it remains important to say that each product will only ever carry the DoSe branding if there is a significant point of difference, that difference enabling a best-in-class status, and we believe that DoSe Digestive Enzyme Complex fully conforms. The formulation contains therapeutic strengths of each of the digestive enzymes which are required to break down fats, carbohydrates, fibres and proteins, but the point of difference here is that Digestive Enzyme Complex has been formulated with three different types of proteases, which are protein digesting enzymes.

That point of difference is extraordinarily important because protein is the hardest food type to digest and very often protein-rich foods are not broken down sufficiently, which can often lead to symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion.  The three forms of proteases used in Digestive Enzyme Complex are Protease 3.0, Protease 4.5 and Protease 6.0, with the numbers signifying the peak pH at which they are most active.  Subsequently, each of the three proteases work effectively at different pH levels in the gut, meaning that these enzymes are active throughout the different stages of digestion in the digestive tract.

Having established the point of difference, our recommendation is to take one capsule with food, which means you can take it just before eating, whilst you are eating or just after you have eaten for optimal efficacy.  I have taken digestive enzymes for many years, I have been writing about the importance of supplementing with digestive enzymes throughout those years and because research moves on, we have incorporated that research into this new cutting-edge formulation. In celebration and with a ‘ban the bloat’ agenda, we are launching DoSe Digestive Enzyme Complex at £25 across this weekend, after which time it will become £29.

Actually, I’m not quite finished writing about digestive enzymes because they also play a significant role in the treatment of Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), which is an overgrowth of bacteria within the small intestine. This overgrowth is often due to a change in the microbiome, which is the environment of the bacteria residing in the intestines. I wanted to mention SIBO because it is one of those conditions you may not realise you have, in fact I read an article about that recently, so I am linking Shabir’s article explaining SIBO below, which I hope gives an understanding of this health concern.
VH Editorial: What Is SIBO?

Staying with DoSe supplementation, when we recently launched Milk Thistle Complex, I wrote that the liver was considered to be one of the most abused organs in our body and that liver disorders were very common.  Milk Thistle supplementation is key to optimal liver health and I accompanied that launch with an article about the use of Milk Thistle Complex for cleansing the liver, but taking it a step further I think it is important to explain how the liver can be healed, so in an overview of liver health, Shabir references and discusses some of those key points about this vital organ in his article, linked below.

On from that, there are many health issues where Milk Thistle supplementation is recommended, and one of those issues is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).  It is estimated that between 10-15% of women suffer from PCOS, making it one of the most common hormonal concerns in women of reproductive age, so a liver cleansing herb, such as Milk Thistle, is an important consideration if you have PCOS.  The reasoning for this is because many menstrual problems and infertility concerns may worsen because of the back-up of hormones within the liver, and Milk Thistle supplementation will help eliminate the toxins and compounds which are not required.

So another article here, an article where Shabir takes an in-depth look at PCOS, and reverting to the formulation, DoSe Milk Thistle Complex does of course include the three well-established liver cleansing herbs, Milk Thistle, Artichoke and Dandelion, which are used in many formulations. Rather than repeat my words about the difference between DoSe Milk Thistle Complex and other forms of Milk Thistle supplementation, you may wish to read my words here, and in the reading of those words you will note that I dropped the price of Milk Thistle Complex at that time from £18 to £15 so, staying equitable, I will do the same today.

Let’s do a common health issue and swollen feet and ankles most definitely fall into that category.  The medical name for this condition is oedema and oedema occurs when fluid is retained outside of the cells of the body.  There are many different reasons why our feet and ankles swell, but generally it happens when there is something wrong with the foot itself, such as a sprain or a fracture, although high blood pressure, weight gain and an excessive amount of salt in our diet can also play a role, as can inactivity.

I touched on the subject of inactivity a couple of weeks ago when I was writing about varicose veins, so just to cover that once again, gravity pulls fluid down to the legs and ankles and under normal circumstances the contraction of muscles in our legs compress the veins, counteracting gravity by moving blood back to the heart. Inactivity can impact the flow of fluids moving from the blood into the surrounding tissues so, as before, we recommend Diosmin Plus, a multi-tasking supplement, which is suitable for rather a lot of vascular disorders, including haemorrhoids.

I’ll drop an article about the prevention and treatment of haemorrhoids below, and I’ll also drop the price of Diosmin Plus down from £28 to £25, but there is one more important thing to say and that is that if you are prone to swollen feet and ankles you need to stay hydrated.  Dehydration causes the constriction of blood vessels leading to the forcing of fluids into the extracellular spaces between cells, which can lead to fluid retention, most especially through the summer months, although dehydration really isn’t season specific.

The recommendation here is to try and reduce caffeine as caffeine is known to contribute to dehydration, and the second recommendation is to take electrolytes, and we recommend Electrolyte Fix Liquid, essentially because it contains specific minerals which support and regulate the water balance in our bodies.  I’m on a bit of an article overload in this section, but never mind that, it remains critically important to share this information for understanding, evaluation and choice.

I am forever writing about having a moment, and I truly had a moment when I read an article stating that the latest big thing in the beauty industry, most specifically hair care, was the inclusion and adoption of fermented ingredients in formulations.  Fulvic is of course a fermented ingredient and because I have been writing about its importance for approximately twenty years, as per my words from the last Weekend Read, I think you can imagine the look on my face. Actually I nearly choked on the coffee I was drinking.

If I had read that article before I had written the last Weekend Read, I would have included the above words, but I didn’t.  And because I didn’t, and because it further demonstrates early adoption of clinically evaluated ingredients, I am taking another moment, a Fulvic moment, where I am throwing a 15% discount across all the Fulvic products, not only the hair care products, and of course that includes Fulvic Face Cream, Fulvic Nail Cream and Fulvic Body Lotion. No more words required here.

I think I might be on a roll, so let’s roll that roll with Better You because for the entire month of July, we are offering a 25% discount across their entire range of products, and there are rather a lot of them.  As ever, I am somewhat biased because we launched Better You a very long time ago with their founder, Andy Thomas, and together we campaigned about the importance of Vitamin D3.  If ever we stood outside of the crowd, we certainly did then, but we also campaigned about the importance of magnesium and the rest became history as the mainstream decided to join in.  On both.  Amen.

We had fun last weekend, well at least I think we had fun when I wrote about the Crystal Nail File by Margaret Dabbs, so let’s have a bit more fun with another Margaret Dabbs product and this time it is her Intensive Anti-Ageing Hand Serum (30 ml) as I drop the price from £30 to £15.  I think we should start a new thing and I am going to call that new thing ‘go again’ because I have done this offer a few times and every time I do it, it sells out really quickly.  It is a limited edition offer so as we do go again, I honestly don’t know how long this offer will last and would it be terrible to say that you could stash these as Christmas gifts.  I think it probably is.

Right, if we are talking about last weekend, let’s talk about two of the eye products I wrote about.  The first product, which was the Hypochlorous Eye Lid Spray went onto a wait list, which really didn’t surprise me because it was formulated for the treatment of blepharitis and blepharitis is such a common issue, but it’s back in stock now. Just to say once again, hypochlorous solutions are primarily used to help clear bacterial infections, but this solution will also help to unblock tear glands, whilst also calming the redness of the skin around the eyes and I think that bodes rather well for optimum eye health.  And it’s clinically tested.
Hypochlorous Eye Lid Spray by The Eye Doctor £10 for 100 ml

The second product, Advanced Comfort Eyelid Oil is, once again, clinically tested, but this time it has been clinically tested for dry eye syndrome and it serves as a preventative measure for the sensitive eye area, protecting the delicate eye area from dryness, flaking and redness.  What I forgot to write last weekend is that it really helps to ‘comfort’ episodes of dermatitis and eczema around the eye, so it lives up to its name in that respect, and I would expect it to.
Advanced Comfort Eyelid Oil by The Eye Doctor £15 for 10 ml

One last thing before we head into the Saturday only treat and it’s July, so it’s the monthly offer from TEMPLESPA and this month the focus is on Let’s Concentrate Skin Brightening Serum.  Let’s Concentrate is a high-performance gel serum which is enriched with Alpha Arbutin, an active ingredient which works to reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation.  Delivering vitamins and natural plant extracts to the cell renewal layer of skin, Let’s Concentrate drops in price from £50 to £40 throughout the month of July, with the offer ending at midnight BST, Wednesday 31 July.
Let’s Concentrate Skin Brightening Serum by TEMPLESPA £40 for 30 ml

And into the Saturday only treat we go, and with every order placed for £35 or above, excluding p&p, we will automatically send you Neom’s Real Luxury Magnesium Body Butter (30 ml)*.  Scented with Neom’s Real Luxury fragrance, which includes Lavender, Jasmine and Sandalwood, this is a further nod to the attributes of magnesium. Full product details are listed below.
