Magnesium

Magnesium supplements are often recommended for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) because they can decrease the symptoms of period pain, mood swings, irritability, breast tenderness, sugar cravings, sleep disturbances, period cramps and headaches.

Magnesium’s benefits for PMS symptoms arise because it displays muscle and nerve relaxing properties; enhances the production of the energising molecule called ATP and supports the stress response by the body.

Small studies also indicate that magnesium when combined with Vitamin B6 significantly reduces PMS symptoms. Studies also indicate that magnesium deficiency is very widespread in the adult population and more so in women suffering from PMS symptoms.

The dosage range of magnesium used in studies for PMS is 400mg to 500mg daily.
