The Story of Comvita's Founding
Comvita founders, Claude Stratford and Alan Bougen, imagined people living healthy lives. Bees were their inspiration and honey their medicine. Claude’s fascination with bees started early. At six he began keeping bees and as a teenager he ran his own beekeeping operation. It wasn’t until 1974 that Claude started making and selling a range of bee products from the basement of his home in Paengaroa. Later joined by Alan Bougen, Comvita was established with a founding vision; to create natural products that worked, while caring for the community and acting in a way that would preserve the environment for generations to come. From humble beginnings 45 years ago, Comvita has grown into a globally-recognised natural health products business which is listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX:CVT) and sells into 18 countries.

Manuka Honey Explained
Manuka honey is a type of honey native to New Zealand, harvested by bees from the nectar of the indigenous manuka shrub, Leptospermum scoparium. The manuka shrub grows wild in New Zealand’s most remote areas and flowers for just 2-6 weeks each year. The manuka shrub’s short flowering season means it takes immense skill, planning and resources to harvest manuka honey, which is why one should never take a single, precious drop of manuka for granted.
What Does Manuka Honey Taste Like?
Manuka honey has a distinctive sweet taste; like a good wine, it grows in flavour and potency and darkens over time. Pure manuka honey has a more intense flavour and darker colour - these are also indicators that your honey contains more beneficial compounds.
What Makes Manuka Honey Different?
Manuka honey from New Zealand contains over 2,000 individual compounds - more than 20x higher than some types of pasture honey, such as clover honey. This makes manuka honey chemically more complex, as it contains a wide array of bioactive micronutrients, including:
- Proteins
- Enzymes
- Amino acids
- Minerals
- Plant-based polyphenolic compounds
Micronutrients support our immune system, energy production and play a key role in our body’s growth and development.
What do Comvita do to protect the environment?
Healthy bees and honey starts with the land and its surroundings. Their hives are located far from pollution and agricultural sprays in remote forests in New Zealand, a country free of genetically modified crops. Throughout 2018, Comvita planted more than 2 million Manuka seedlings throughout New Zealand, contributing to an overall total of 4,000,000 Manuka seedlings planted across the country since 2016. Where Manuka planting takes place, marginal and soil-eroded land is restored, and waterways become cleaner, which supports our aquatic biodiversity and local habitats. They take extra care to offer the best natural products, and when it comes to the way they're packaged, they make the same conscious considerations. Most of their products are packed in BPA-free recyclable plastic. As they ship from New Zealand, plastic is lighter to ship overseas and therefore reduces the carbon footprint.
