MacuShield Original, 90 capsules, is an eye supplement containing meso-zeaxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein food supplement, derived from marigolds to support visual clarity and focus. MacuShield original has been tested at leading research institutes and endorsed by eye care professionals. Scientists have long known that the yellow colour, or pigment, at the macula comes from the carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin.
These plant compounds found in Macushield capsules are antioxidants that neutralise free radicals originating from smoking, pollution, fried foods and most importantly blue light and oxidative stress.

What is MacuShield®?
MacuShield® is a food supplement for the eyes designed to support and maintain eye health and normal vision. It began with MacuShield® Original, derived from the marigold flower (Tagetes erecta), and contains the three essential macular carotenoids: Meso-zeaxanthin, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin. These nutrients cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are typically found in dark green leafy vegetables and brightly coloured fruits, while Meso-zeaxanthin is present in certain fish and seafood. Since its launch, the MacuShield® range has expanded, but all products remain centred around this core formula.
Can MacuShield® Original and MacuShield® Gold be taken by diabetics?
Yes. Both MacuShield® Original and MacuShield® Gold are free from sucrose and may be safely taken by individuals with diabetes.
At what time of the day can you take MacuShield® Original?
MacuShield® Original is a three capsules a day supplement. These can be taken together or separately through the day, preferably with meals.
How are the ingredients in MacuShield® food supplements sourced?
The three macular carotenoids in MacuShield® products are derived from the marigold flower (Tagetes erecta), grown specifically for the production of Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-zeaxanthin, ensuring high quality and purity.
Are there dietary sources of macular carotenoids?
Macular carotenoids are obtained exclusively from the diet. An average western diet provides approximately 1.3 to 3 mg of these carotenoids per day. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in dark green leafy vegetables and brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. MacuShield® food supplements provide a convenient way to support macular pigment levels but are not a replacement for a balanced diet.
What are the differences between MacuShield® Gold and MacuShield® Original?
While both MacuShield® Original and MacuShield® Gold contain the three macular carotenoids, MacuShield® Gold also includes high doses of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Copper. Additionally, MacuShield® Original Chewable provides the original formula with added Vitamin B2.
What are carotenoids?
Carotenoids are naturally occurring plant pigments, with over 700 identified to date. Among these, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-zeaxanthin are particularly important for eye health, accumulating at the macula to form the macular pigment, which helps protect the retina from oxidative stress.
What is Lutein?
Lutein is a natural carotenoid obtained solely from dietary sources. It accumulates at the macula, the central part of the retina, and is most commonly found in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and peas.
What is Zeaxanthin?
Zeaxanthin is a natural carotenoid of dietary origin that concentrates in the macula. It is present in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, including peppers and sweetcorn, contributing to the macular pigment that supports visual health.
What is Meso-zeaxanthin?
Meso-zeaxanthin is the carotenoid most central to the macula, forming the epicentre of the macular pigment. It occurs naturally in the human food chain, primarily in certain species of fish, and is a key component of MacuShield® food supplements.
What is the macula?
The macula is the central, most sensitive part of the retina. The carotenoids Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-zeaxanthin accumulate here to form the macular pigment, which plays a vital role in protecting the eye from oxidative stress.
