Symprove Daily Essential in Strawberry and Raspberry flavour is a four-week programme containing 4 x 500 ml of Symprove liquid drink. Symprove Strawberry & Raspberry contains the same active ingredients as Symprove Original, which help support the gut microbiome, but with a fruity taste for those who prefer a different flavour.
Symprove is a multi-strain non-dairy drink containing lactic acid bacteria to maintain digestive health and replenish 'friendly' bacteria in the gut. The four species of naturally occurring bacteria are grown on an extract of germinated barley. Barley also contains a unique food source providing the best possible conditions for the Symprove bacteria to thrive and work effectively in your gut. Symprove's ingredients are also certified gluten free.
The four species of live bacterial cultures in Symprove are: L. rhamnosus, planatarum, acidophilus and E. faecium. Lactobacilli are the most widely researched microorganisms and many scientific papers have described how these bacteria have specific roles for metabolic activity and are essential to our health.
Why is Symprove so different?
Not all lactic acid bacteria are alike or work in the same way and the bacteria strains in our multi-strain barley drink are totally different to other supplements. Symprove has achieved breakthrough results in the way bacteria are transported to your gut. This is due to its Unique Delivery System (UDS) and formula where the bacteria are alive and ready to work (activated) from the moment Symprove is swallowed. Symprove's benefits are achieved because it does not trigger digestion as its Unique Delivery System (UDS) protects these bacteria from acids and bile salts as they travel through the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, and delivers them to targeted areas in the gut, where the bacteria begin to establish quickly.
- Dairy and gluten free
- Gentle on the gut
- Replenishes gut bacteria
- Unique Delivery System (UDS)
- A natural science to support gut health
- Each batch independently lab tested
- 70ml of Symprove delivers at least 10 billion live activated bacteria.
- A light berry flavour – also with a tangy aftertaste.
Our In-House pharmacist, Shabir Daya has written an article about Symprove:
Directions: Make Symprove the start of your day. Shake the bottle gently before use. Drink once a day on an empty stomach. Using the measuring cup provided, use 70ml per day Please leave a few minutes before eating and drinking to allow the live bacteria to get through the stomach safely. Once open, store in the refrigerator. Do not freeze or heat. Don’t forget that each pack has a shelf-life of six months because our bacteria is alive. So always check the pack for the expiry date.
It is important to remember that in a very few cases, during the early days of taking Symprove, some people experience loosening of the stools as their body adjusts to the new bacteria. This is perfectly normal and should soon settle (continue to take Symprove every day even if this happens).

How is Symprove made?
Symprove is made in a controlled environment through a series of carefully controlled stages. First we boil specially selected grain to create a wort. The wort is purified and sterilised and following this, the temperature is controlled in sterilised vats and the four strains of bacteria are carefully introduced. The live bacteria begin to divide and once the required levels are reached, the process is halted and Symprove is ready for bottling once it’s been tested by an independent laboratory. Throughout every stage, the bacteria are carefully nurtured as they are living organisms. The bacteria we use are high purity laboratory cultures which are unique to Symprove. To transform Symprove from grain and good bugs into their famous gut-loving formula, they follow these key steps:
- They boil specially selected grain to create a wort
- Then they purify it and keep it at a consistent temperature in sterilised vats
- Carefully they add the star ingredients – their four strains of bacteria!
- These begin to multiply
- Once they have just the right quantities of bacteria
- They send Symprove off for independent testing
- After that, they’re ready to bottle up!
Is Symprove a prebiotic or probiotic?
Symprove is a food supplement which contains live bacteria in a barley extract. The bacteria may be considered probiotics, and the barley extract a prebiotic. However, the use of both these terms is not permissible in commercial communications under European food law.
Is there any research into Symprove?
Symprove has a strong Research & Development Programme and is constantly improving its products. We are researching two main areas. Firstly, the effectiveness of the delivery system, where we work extensively with independent laboratories and Healthcare Professionals to make sure our delivery system is as good as it can possibly be. In fact, breakthrough independent research by University College London (UCL), where they tested mainstream products on sale in the UK, shows that Symprove is the only product they tested that could meet all three challenges of being able to arrive, survive, thrive and colonise in the gut. Secondly, for over 10 years, Symprove have invested heavily into research with leading independent Health professionals to demonstrate the effectiveness of Symprove.
What health claims can Symprove make?
Regulatory law means that probiotics are categorised as food products and cannot make health claims. In addition, it is now no longer permissible to use the word probiotics in consumer marketing materials. Many people believe that taking products containing live bacteria are important tools for a healthy lifestyle.
What is Symprove?
Symprove is a water-based formulation that contains four unique strains of live activated bacteria. Because of this unique formulation Symprove will not trigger digestion, meaning the bacteria are able to:
Arrive to the gut unharmed and in full strength
Survive the harsh acidic environment of the stomach
Thrive in the gut to colonise successfully
Symprove helps to support the gut microbiome and balance gut bacteria.
Commit to 12 weeks?
We want you to use Symprove for at least 12 weeks as it can take time for dietary changes to take effect. British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines also recommend 12 weeks when trying bacteria-based supplements.
Which difference might I see over the 12 weeks?
A minority of people report some ups and downs as their bodies adjust to the Symprove bacteria. This is perfectly normal so don’t be alarmed and continue to take Symprove daily. Most people report a positive feeling within the first few weeks, although it can take longer.
It’s important to take Symprove for the full 12 weeks to give your body time to adjust to the dietary change. British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines also recommend 12 weeks when trying bacteria-based supplements.
In the latter part of the 12 week programme, customers generally report that their experience settles as routine is established and they become accustomed to the Symprove bacteria.
From an independent trial on Symprove it was found that 12 weeks was an optimal period for change.
Your body is totally unique, so your experience of Symprove will be too. What Symprove’s research shows us for sure is that there are some key stages people go through:
- In the first few weekssome people notice a big improvement, while others experience some gut disturbances – but these niggles are perfectly normal.
- In the weeks that followas the gut balance usually improves, so fewer people report upsets – and more tell us that they feel better.
- The exciting news is that 94% of people feel a positive differenceafter three months of taking Symprove.
So all you have to do is take it the same way each day – and let our good bugs do their thing.
Who makes Symprove?
Symprove is made by Symprove Holdings Ltd. in the UK. The Founding Team have over 25 years’ experience of making live culture products. All the ingredients in Symprove are sourced and produced in Great Britain.
What does Symprove taste like?
Original: Where it all started. For those who don’t like things too sweet, the Original is a little tart with a sour aftertaste.
Mango & Passion Fruit - Slightly sweeter than the Original, Mango & Passion Fruit has a refreshing tropical fruit flavour, with a slightly sour aftertaste.
Strawberry and Raspberry - The sweetest of the bunch. A light berry flavour – also with a tangy aftertaste.
What are the active ingredients in Symprove?
Their active ingredients – also known as the fab four – are types of live and “activated” lactic acid bacteria. These are:
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Enterococcus faecium
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- All four are safely used in food.
Can you give Symprove to children?
As Symprove is a natural food supplement, it is suitable for children at the parent/carer's discretion. A dose of 1ml per kg of weight should be used.
Can Symprove be used whilst breast-feeding/pregnant or if I am immune compromised?
Symprove is a safe food supplement. If you are on medication please check your medicine leaflet for any foods to avoid. However, if you are unsure, please speak to your healthcare practitioner. Symprove is a food supplement that contains live and activated bacteria; it does not contain any of the food ingredients recommended for avoidance during pregnancy and breast-feeding. However, as with any significant dietary changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, we would always recommend that you check with your healthcare professional first. For people who are immune compromised, we would recommend you take a copy of the label and discuss suitability with your healthcare professional.
Does Symprove need to be kept in the refrigerator?
Once you open a bottle of Symprove, please pop in the fridge and be sure to consume within 10 days of opening.
How long do I need to take Symprove?
In order to keep your gut bacteria in balance once the 12 week programme is complete, we recommend that you continue to take Symprove.
How much Symprove should I take?
Simply fill the small cup (70ml) provided with your bottle of Symprove and take every morning on an empty stomach. Wait 10 minutes (ideally) before eating or drinking then continue with your day as usual. Each cup contains about 10 billion live colony forming units.
How should I look after Symprove?
Before opening, Symprove should be stored in a cool dark place. Once opened, keep in the fridge and consume within 10 days of opening. Do not freeze or heat as this will kill the bacteria.
Should I take Symprove during/following antibiotics?
Yes, it’s always helpful to top up your gut during or after antibiotic treatment to maintain balance in the gut. Whilst antibiotics usually help to get on top of illness, they can also destroy the ‘beneficial’ bacteria in the gut at the same time. We recommend that you take Symprove at a different time to your antibiotics if possible – remember that ideally you should take Symprove a minimum of 10 minutes before eating or drinking to allow it to pass through the stomach to successfully arrive, survive and thrive in the gut.
Should I take Symprove with food?
We recommend you take Symprove first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before breakfast. Ideally, you should wait a minimum of 10 minutes before eating and drinking to allow Symprove the best chance of reaching your gut quickly and begin colonising. If you do eat immediately afterwards or drink Symprove with food, it won’t do you any harm, but it may slow down the delivery of Symprove. If you forget to take Symprove first thing and have eaten, allow two hours after eating and then take Symprove.
What happens if I miss a dose?
The recommended dose of 70ml a day is to ensure that colonisation of the gut is maintained by the bacteria within Symprove. Each person has a different gut microbiome and may be affected differently by missing a dose or stopping Symprove. Whilst there may be no obvious change to your body, we advise that you return to a daily recommended use as soon as possible. Check out these tried and tested tips from our helpful community:
- Set a reminder on your phone that goes off 10 minutes after your morning wake-up alarm. That way, it catches you before you tuck into breakfast!
- You could also do something similar in the evening. Set a reminder before bed to place your Symprove shot glass on the kitchen counter – so you can’t miss it in the morning!
- Alternatively, try training yourself to associate taking Symprove with a little morning treat. Why not use the 10 minutes after you’ve taken it to do something small for you? Play Wordle on your phone, do some meditation, or read a poem. Whatever works for you.
- Sometimes just linking an action with something else you enjoy can be enough to bed-in your new habit.
What is the shelf life for Symprove and how should it be stored?
Symprove is bottled as a live culture but it can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place. The shelf-life is six months (please read the best before date which is printed on the bottle). Once opened, keep refrigerated but do not freeze or heat as this will kill the bacteria.
Is Symprove a natural product
Yes, Symprove is made from 100% naturally-derived ingredients. Their key ingredients are water, barley extract, and bacteria. Yet even the additional flavourings and colourings found in our Strawberry and Raspberry and Mango and Passion Fruit flavours are from totally natural sources – found in everyday foods.
