Haemorrhoids are badly swollen veins located around the anus and along the very lowest part of the rectum, similar to varicose veins. There are two types of haemorrhoids, external and internal. External haemorrhoids, commonly known as ‘piles’, occur when blood vessels swell up near the anus causing tremendous pain and discomfort. Internal haemorrhoids are usually painless but may cause bleeding.
Haemorrhoids are often caused by straining during a bowel movement which puts pressure on the tissues causing the area to become inflamed and swollen. Haemorrhoids can also be caused by constipation, diarrhoea or simply sitting on the toilet too long, all of which can cause increased pressure on the veins in the anus region.
There are many natural haemorrhoid treatments which include topical creams to soothe and comfort the area, natural remedies to reduce inflammation and swelling, magnesium bath salts to improve circulation and reduce swelling as well as witch hazel known for its ability to shrink haemorrhoids.
