Trinny & Shabir Live: Common Health Concerns

In case you missed Shabir on Trinny Woodall’s Facebook Live on Sunday morning, we’ve compiled a round-up of some of the topics covered and the best supplements to tackle the most common health concerns.

Can a supplement boost your collagen?

There is a lot of confusion surrounding collagen drinks and supplements. Collagen is a very large molecule so it’s a contentious issue amongst scientists. Some believe the stomach will break it down and very little collagen will pass from the stomach into the bloodstream. This is why it perhaps better to use nutrients that are known to help promote collagen production which is why we’ve created Fabulous Skin, which contains Hyaluronic Acid, Skin Restoring Phytoceramides and Astaxanthin with Phospholipids.

Are sprays better than capsules?

Where possible it is always better to go for a sublingual supplement as it bypasses your digestive system. Anything that goes through your stomach is likely to become compromised as this is a highly acidic environment and could deactivate the supplement in some way. Not all vitamins are available via sublingual at the moment, but you can get vitamin D and vitamin K. The jury is still out on vitamin C though as it’s not known if you can achieve the right amounts.

The forgotten supplement we’re often deficient in

When it comes to vitamin deficiencies, iron and vitamin D are often the two that spring to mind, but magnesium levels shouldn’t be ignored. Yet, it is estimated that a staggering 70 percent of the adult population may be magnesium deficient. Known to help balance hormones, release tension in the body, including easing headaches and improve your quality of sleep, magnesium is one of the most important minerals in our body. If you’re concerned about any vitamin deficiencies, it’s worth asking your GP for a test.

Zinc isn’t the only answer to acne

Zinc is often the first port of call for acne as it reduces inflammation and is called the ‘traffic police of supplements’ because it ensures nutrients are spread throughout your body, but Burdock Root is also worth exploring. Not only does it support your liver and helps to cleanse the blood stream. It also has antibacterial properties. Viridian Clear Skin Complex combines the two with Gotu Kola, which is a herb that helps boost your natural collagen production. For more information, read Shabir’s piece on How To Get Clear Skin.

Prebiotic vs probiotic

When shopping for a probiotic supplement, you want six or seven strains that live across the gut to help boost immunity and digestion. Prebiotics are the food source for probiotics and help the bacteria to multiply. Most good probiotics, including Mega Probio, contain prebiotics. To get the maximum benefits from probiotics take them after eating as it gives the bacteria something to grip onto. If you’re still confused about finding the right one for you, read Shabir’s feature on What Can’t Probiotics Do?
