4711 Eau De Cologne: At the beginning of the 18th Century, Italian expatriate, Johann Maria Farina, created a new fragrance and named it Eau de Cologne (water from cologne), after his new residence, Cologne. In the course of the 18th Century the fragrance became increasingly popular and some years later a Cologne merchant, Wilhelm Mulhens, secured the rights to the Farina family name and began manufacturing his own version of the fragrance.
The residence, 4711 Glockengasse, was given to the House of Mulhens during the occupation of Cologne in 1796 and the number 4711 thereafter characterised Eau de Cologneand became the new name for the product.
The precise composition of what is arguably the earliest true 'Cologne' remains a guarded secret but the principal ingredients include the essence of essential oils from select citrus fruits and small quantities of Rosemary and Lavender. The result is an incredibly clean and fresh citrus cologne that instantly revives the wearer. What makes 4711 truly unique is its power to compliment and even enhance other fragrances since it leaves only a whisper of scent and never clashes.
