Can I use a handheld whisk instead of a chasen (a bamboo matcha whisk)?
A handheld whisk or milk frother can be an excellent alternative to the traditional chasen. Handheld milk frothers, in particular, do a great job at frothing the matcha and many find them easier to use.
How do I use this instead of a chasen?
If you have a small enough whisk like this one, you can use a regular bowl and whisk the same way you would with a bamboo whisk.
If I whisk my matcha, what are the benefits?
This foam not only makes the tea look nice, but it also gives it a smoother and creamier taste.
Why should I whisk the matcha in the first place?
Matcha technically doesn't dissolve in water. Whisking matcha helps the powder suspend in water. If you're not whisking matcha, then you have to find a different way to suspend the powder and make sure the hot tea isn't chalky and clumpy.
Why should I use a whisk when I make matcha?
It's the easiest way to get rid of clumps and perfectly creates that traditional froth on top of your tea.
Why does my matcha fall to the bottom?
Matcha is a suspension. If you let it sit for too long, the powder will settle at the bottom. The idea is to drink it quickly.
