What causes cracked heels?
Cracked heels occur when the skin around the heel becomes dry, thickened, and loses its natural elasticity. This can be due to factors like dry weather, standing for long periods, open-back shoes, or lack of moisturizing.

Why are cracked heels bad for my feet?
Cracked heels can lead to discomfort, pain, and even infections. Deep cracks (fissures) can bleed and cause soreness, making walking or standing painful.

Can cracked heels lead to infections?
Yes. Open cracks can allow bacteria or fungi to enter the skin, leading to infections. This is especially risky for people with diabetes or compromised immune systems.

Do cracked heels affect my overall foot health?
Absolutely. If untreated, cracked heels can cause skin thickening, calluses, and inflammation, which may affect your gait and posture due to pain.

Are cracked heels a sign of any underlying health problems?
Sometimes. Persistent cracked heels can indicate conditions like eczema, psoriasis, thyroid issues, or diabetes. If your cracked heels don’t improve with care, see a healthcare professional.

How can I prevent cracked heels?
Regular moisturising, wearing supportive shoes, avoiding prolonged standing on hard surfaces, and gentle exfoliation can help prevent cracked heels.

When should I see a doctor about cracked heels?
If cracks are deep, bleeding, painful, or showing signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus), or if you have diabetes and foot issues, seek medical advice promptly.
