Vitamin K actually refers to a group of vitamins with similar structures. These are Vitamin K1, known as phylloquinone, and Vitamin K2, known as menaquinone. Vitamin K1 is synthesised by plants, vegetables and algae and has a low bioavailability. Vitamin K2 is synthesised by gut bacteria and has a high bioavailability. Vitamin K2 can be found in fermented foods, particularly cheese and natto (Japanese fermented soya beans).

Vitamin K plays an important role in the synthesis of a group of proteins called Gla-proteins which are important in the utilisation of calcium. Its importance in relation to blood clotting and bone health has been well understood as well as recent research which identifies its crucial role in arterial health. Here, the deposition of calcium in the blood vessel walls is prevented by the action of these Gla-proteins, which is activated by Vitamin K2.

Dosage:One Solgar Vitamin K2 capsule daily.
